Volunteer Turnout Exceeded Goal
for 22nd Annual Coastal Cleanup Day

This year’s California Coastal Cleanup Day in San Diego County dramatically exceeded goals, as 5,850 volunteers participated in the event at 63 coastal and inland sites. These dedicated volunteers removed 179,411 pounds of trash and 17,585 pounds of recyclables from the waterways and beaches throughout San Diego County from Fallbrook all the way down to Tijuana.

California Coastal Cleanup Day is organized by the California Coastal Commission and takes place at many sites throughout the state. This year, approximately 48,000 participants across 45 counties removed over 800,000 pounds of debris.

California Coastal Cleanup Day is a major part of International Cleanup Day, a global cleanup event organized by The Ocean Conservancy. Its importance is in that it brings together communities who share a common vision to preserve local beaches, waterways, and other recreation areas. Coastal Cleanup Day is more than just a cleanup event; it educates people of the ongoing problems of pollution, and encourages worldwide volunteer participation and environmental stewardship.
