The next California Coastal Cleanup Day (CCD) will be on September 25, 2010. San Diego Coastkeeper and I Love A Clean San Diego, in partnership with the California Coastal Commission, will continue to coordinate San Diego’s largest volunteer event in support of the marine environment. The mission of CCD is to engage people to remove debris from the California’s beaches and waterways; to identify the sources of marine debris; and ultimately change the behaviors that cause pollution.
CCD 2009 proved to be another record setting year in San Diego. The event grew by nearly 2000 volunteers in San Diego County. 10,203volunteers cleaned up 165 miles of beaches, bays, estuaries, canyons, creeks, rivers and urban areas, and removed 170,000 pounds of debris! In addition, the event grew by nearly 10,000 volunteers statewide, bringing out more than 75,000 volunteers who collected 1.2 million pounds of debris. In addition, CCD is part of International Coastal Cleanup, which included 400,000 volunteers at 6,485 sites in 104 countries and 42 U.S. states. In total, volunteers collected more than 6.8 million pounds of trash. Volunteers not only cleaned up trash, they recorded 11.4 million items from cigarette butts to fast food wrappers to cast-off appliances helping to provide a global snapshot of marine debris around the world.

Without the help of amazing volunteers like you, most of the debris collected would ultimately end up polluting our waterways, contaminating soil, damaging fragile marine ecosystems and endangering marine life. Please SAVE THE DATE for Coastal Cleanup Day 2010. Registration is now open.
