SCUBA Divers
Are you a scuba diver?

  • Would you like to learn more about local marine habitats?

  • Do you want to be part of a team of divers working together to study our local Kelp Forests?

San Diego Coastkeeper utilizes volunteer SCUBA Divers to assist with its Kelp Forest Monitoring and Restoration project. This project is part of a regional effort in association with NOAA and the California Coastkeeper Alliance.

Divers are trained in underwater data collection, diving safety techniques, identification of marine organisms and restoration techniques.

Diver Requirements
In order to volunteer with the project, divers must meet several prerequisites, some of which are the following:

  • Advanced (or the equivalent) SCUBA certification
  • Rescue Diver certification
  • At least 30 hours of Southern California diving experience (low visibility, cold water, surge, etc.)
  • DAN (or equivalent) diving insurance
  • Attendance at a Research Diving Workshop (held periodically throughout the year)
  • The desire to be part of an exciting project right here in your own backyard!
