San Diego Coastkeeper

Project Overview

In order to further marine conservation goals in San Diego County, Coastkeeper is working with stakeholders and an array of other non-profit groups to increase the number, size and protections of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) in Southern California, while raising awareness about the importance of MPAs among the public. We are mobilizing citizens to support the Marine Life Protection Act (MLPA) and aid the State’s efforts to create a series of marine reserves along the California coast by 2011. By performing outreach and educating the public on the importance of the beautiful marine ecosystems in our communities’ backyard, citizens will understand how environmental problems affect them personally, and when given opportunities to make a difference themselves, they will be compelled to be involved and generate support for the MLPA.

San Diego Coastkeeper’s involvement in the Marine Life Protection Act Initiative will focus on:

  • Working through MLPA to implement a cohesive network of MPAs in Southern California;
  • Conducting outreach to the community including general public, stakeholders, academics, and decision makers regarding the MLPA to gain necessary support for successful marine conservation; and
  • Undertaking Marine Monitoring of existing and future Marine Protected Areas.
