Formed in 1995, San Diego Coastkeeper is the largest and most effective non-profit organization working to ensure that San Diego’s waters are clean, safe and healthy for the people and wildlife that depend on them. Through community programs and advocacy campaigns, Coastkeeper engages thousands of San Diegans to help in protecting our bays and beaches for ourselves and for future generations. As a result of our efforts,
- Sewage spills and beach advisories have decreased dramatically throughout the county;
- San Diego’s regulations for stormwater and industrial discharge standards are now considered best practices for California and the nation;
- More than 30,000 volunteers have helped with beach cleanup, water and habitat monitoring programs over the past five years;
- 40,000 children receive coastal education programs annually; and
- Coastkeeper is at the center of vibrant and effective environmental movement in San Diego, where coastal protection is now part of the political and community dialogue.
