Free public forum will address water conservation, implementation tips, and access to rebates.
SAN DIEGO, May 20, 2013— Did you know that the water you use to water your grass travels more than 400 miles? Or how about that 60% of residential water is used outside of the home? Surprising right? With this in mind, San Diego Coastkeeper, an organization that protects and restores fishable, swimmable, drinkable waters, invites residents of the San Diego community to learn about simple and important ways to contribute to water conservation in San Diego County at Signs of the Tide: In Over our Heads–San Diego’s Water Deficit. At the event, representatives from the City of San Diego Water Conservation Department, RainThanks & Greywater, and Save the Colorado will address the benefits of water conservation and the value of getting involved in the City of San Diego rebate programs. They will also discuss the feasible changes and ways to implement water conservation techniques into homes throughout the county and why residents deserve rebates for implementing these changes. This free event will be from 5:30p.m. – 7:30 p.m. at Carmel Mountain Ranch Library on May 22, 2013.
This event will inform and encourage the residents of San Diego to be part of the water conservation movement. Community members will hear about the City of San Diego rebate program and conservation techniques, such as turf replacement with native plants, using LID-type landscape design, and rainwater harvesting, to help with water conservation and the reduction of storm water pollution. By implementing these techniques throughout San Diego County, we can each contribute to a cleaner and more sustainable area for everybody to enjoy!
At the event, community members will hear from three experts.
- JoEllen Jacoby, Supervising Landscape Conservation Designer from the City of San Diego Water Conservation Department, will discuss the rebate programs offered by the City of San Diego. JoEllen has taught irrigation and landscape design classes at local community colleges and Ball State University, as well as consulted for many water conservation programs.
- Candace Vanderhoff, CEO and founder of RainThanks & Greywater, will provide information about sustainable reuse systems like rainwater harvesting, greywater reuse, rain gardens and low impact development techniques to grow food, and native plants, and low water landscapes.
- Gary Wockner, Save the Colorado campaign coordinator, will discuss our relationship to the most endangered river in America while exploring different ways our efforts in San Diego can impact areas beyond our homes and yards.
