San Diego Coastkeeper’s free event discusses water supply, conversation

SAN DIEGO, October 29, 2010- San Diego Coastkeeper, the region’s leading environmental nonprofit protecting inland and coastal waters, will host its quarterly Signs of the Tide public forum on Wednesday, Dec. 8, from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. The event at Urban Corps of San Diego, located at 3127 Jefferson St., includes a panel presentation examining the current water supply future for the San Diego region and how the region can create a stable water supply without devastating the coastline and major rivers.
“The Upper Colorado River and the Sacramento-San Joaquin River System are two of America’s Most Endangered Rivers™, yet these systems provide the San Diego region with nearly 80 percent of our water,” said Coastkeeper Executive Director Bruce Reznik. “We’re in a drought and our yearly average rainfall along the coast is less than 10 inches. More than three million people live in San Diego County now, with more than 700,000 more expected within 30 years. The question is, how we will ever find enough water?”
Voiceofsandiego.org Senior Writer Rob Davis will moderate the panel, consisting of:
• David Pierce, Analyst, Climate Research Division, Scripps Institute of Oceanography, UCSD
• Brook Sarson, Rainwater Harvesting and Water Reuse Professional, H2OME
• Bruce Reznik, San Diego Coastkeeper Executive Director
• Additional environmental activist(s) sharing firsthand knowledge of the state’s collective impact to the river systems
Following the presentations, attendees will then have an opportunity to further delve into the topic via group discussions and Q&A led by Davis.
Signs of the Tide, sponsored by SDG&E Smart Meter and Cook & Schmid, are community events designed to educate, engage and empower participants in issues relating to the health of San Diego’s coastal waters. The meetings rotate locations throughout San Diego. All events are free, open to the community and include light snacks and beverages.
